Narcissistic Personality Disorder Case Study

You're not entitled to behave like a narcissist unless you can spell it properly. After six failed attempts, I can proudly (or humbly) say that I'm not a narcissist. And, frankly, it feels good to be above all those pithy self-promoters (see my forthcoming article), for whom I have no empathy. Given the APA's announcement to remove NPD as its own category from the 5th edition (2013) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, part of me celebrates what I consider as poetic justice. Another part of me, however, wonders if this may inflame the problem.

Narcissism

I always assumed that "narcissism" was simply a convenient clinical scapegoat for irritating conceit, another cog in the nurture versus nature machine. Narcissistic Personality Disorder, however, as least according to the current DSM and more than a few credible psychologists, is much more complicated and damaging. Those characterized by NPD are reported as exhibiting various degrees of overbearing self-entitlement, lack of empathy or the ability to perceive as another, and raging jealousy of others in the spotlight (among other symptoms, of course, lest you mark nearly every teenager on the planet as having NPD). These symptoms, in turn, can lead to compulsive behaviors that destroy relationships. It makes sense that those who fit NPD diagnosis don't know it, refuse to admit it, or rarely seek treatment.
